BLOC Sofa by Hopper and Space

25th March 2015

Ladies and Gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to introduce you to BLOC, a sofa made in the UK by my good friends Hopper and Space. The sofa and chair were inspired by Soviet era modernist furniture and Ben and Joe, who run this cool company selling re-imagined and now custom-made furniture, thought the bold and boxy shapes fitted perfectly with the current zeitgeist.

Both pieces are hand-built in the UK to order. They have solid hardwood frames and legs and the  upholstery materials are high density foam which was chosen for its comfort and Melton wool fabric from British sheep which is woven in a family owned mill in the Pennines.
The colour shown is Mussel with a walnut leg finish but you can also choose both the fabric and leg colour or even supply your own choice of fabric. Joe said: “It’s a totally bespoke service right down to the dimensions. If people would like the size altered to suit their home or business premises we can do it.
“The bold and boxy designs of the time really caught our eye and we thought that while in a classic form they had something fresh to offer.”

The BLOC Sofa is £1195 and the standard dimensions are Length 210cm. Full depth 82cm. Full height 80cm. The BLOC Club is £595 and the standard dimensions are Width 90cm. Full depth 82cm. Full height 80cm.

Joe also told me that there are some more designs on their way including a 1950’s style wing back two seater sofa and armchair upholstered in raspberry wool with ebonised legs. I can’t wait to see that one. That fabulous lamp, in case you were wondering, is a Treetops designed by Ettore Sottsass in 1981. I think it’s in the boys’ private collection and not for sale. But if they do decide to part with it then bagsy first dibs.
They will also source and reupholster original pieces to order as you can see in a couple of the images above. Elle Deco described them as using “zingy retro patterns” and I think we can agree that a bit more zinginess is needed in all our lives. So on that note, wishing you all a very zingy day.
