Monday Inspiration: Beautiful Spaces

trestle basin vanity by Brigette Romanek in wallpapered bathroom. Large
Some really clever ideas in this week's mix of beautiful spaces, several of which include a touch of vintage - which, as you know, I think is always a good idea. In fact, it's never a bad idea. Some restful colours, clever ideas and all created by people who I think are worth following for

Monday Inspiration: Beautiful Spaces

Black and white chequer board kitchen floor and bed head as bench back by medina @grillodesigns
A mix of beautiful rooms for you this week with no particular theme. Last week we needed calming spaces and then shortly after that the world basically exploded and everyone is shouting at everyone else. With just and understandable cause it seems. So here are five rooms. All by clever people, all of whom are

Monday Inspiration: Post Pandemic Design – All White Now?

via stadshem.se
Do you remember when grey really took off as a colour? One minute we were all happily sloshing on the magnolia and then, suddenly, we had all, as it were, faded to grey. I wrote a feature for The Independent in 2009 after interviewing a Dulux spokesperson whole told me that grey was the new

Monday Inspiration: Beautiful Rooms

A look at some inspiring room schemes with Kate Watson-Smyth. This home office features a terracotta filing cabinet is a darker shade than the walls and the green cupboard provides a glorious jolt of contrast. #homeoffice #terracottascheme #madaboutthehouse
Come on in. Let's go for a calm and quiet stroll through a collection of beautiful rooms and take a moment to look at what appeals (or doesn't in each room). We have the time to plan so we might as well really look at what works for us in each of these and see

So here we are then. It's certainly not the new normal yet is it, but it's the new reality at least. I hope you are all staying well and indoors. Can I firstly say thank you all so much for your messages of support for my post last week. I will absolutely continue to write

Now before we start: a word on the virus. I feel that you come here for escapism, for home decorating advice and chat, and to see things you might want for your own homes and to be inspired. I also feel that for some of you right now that will feel inappropriate and wrong. I'm

Morning to you all and I hope you are all ok after the battering from Storm Dennis over the weekend. We discovered a leak in the top bathroom which is coming down into our bedroom below but I'm not sure I can blame Dennis for it in all honesty. Fence panels and roof tiles are

Keeping it calm and C-free for as long as possible. Come on in to The Mad House, which is, among a sea of Christmas insanity, the least mad space around at the moment. The earlier it starts on social media the more I resist and find peace and pleasure in these beautiful rooms below. Head

Monday Inspiration: Beautiful Rooms

ochre pouf and old painting by @n0.17house
Starting today with a bright burst of yellow as the clocks went back yesterday in the UK and although I'm typing this on a beautifully sunny Autumn morning (albeit with no idea what time it actually is) it might all have gone to winter by the time you are reading this in 24 hours time.

Monday Inspiration: Beautiful Rooms

A look of some favourite beautiful rooms with Kate Watson-Smyth. This bedroom has a black painted ceiling but, in a clever touch, so is the coving all the way round. This has the effect of softening the hard line you get when the wall hits the ceiling at right angles and also bends the ceiling slightly down over the walls making it look higher. The black vanity unit is softened with some cane detailing and gold accents. #bedroom #blackceiling #madaboutthehouse
After the last few weeks of finding a theme to this regular Beautiful Rooms post I decided to just pick some great spaces this week. There is a loose connection, if you want to look for such a thing, in that all of them have one or two great stand out features that make them

Morning to you and Happy Monday (or whatever time or day of the week you are reading this). I thought we'd start with this very jolly kitchen from Plain English which has been painted in the new colours created for them by Rita Konig. So that's cupboards in Nicotine (yes strange name but lovely colour)

Monday Inspiration: Mad About The Bathroom

Kate Watson-Smyth takes a look at bathroom design and how to take inspiration and adapt it for your space. A classic background of mostly white but the freestanding bath has been painted in a deep plum colour. And you could change this if you got bored. The black chandelier is the real focal point in this bathroom. #bathroomdesign #freestandingbath #madaboutthehouse
It's a shorter post this week (will anyone notice or mind?) as this weekend has been spent taking the 18yo to his new home at university. I was completely fine about him going until two days before when he texted me and asked me out to lunch. And I had to work. And it really

Morning everyone and welcome to Monday. I trust everyone is back in the swing of things now? We have one week till we take the 18yo to university so it's going to be a slightly strange week for us, but there's nothing like a stroll though some gorgeous rooms to calm the senses and help

And we're back. Happy September everyone. Are you ready? I'm sure the parents among you are desperate for term to start again. It's bittersweet for us this year as the 18yo will be off to university in a couple of weeks which is both a proud and a tearful moment. For everyone else ( and

Thought it would be nice to revisit these lovely calming neutrals for this bank holiday Monday. And the physics GCSE? He passed! You know, of course, the saying that for every reaction there is an equal and opposite reaction? Actually maybe I only know that because I have a 15yo studying physics GCSE, but, that

Journalist Kate Watson-Smyth looks at living with calming colours and how we react to them. A bold floral mural wallpaper has a calming and restful palette of green and pink is combined with an unexpected yellow cabinet for a modern touch. #madaboutthehouse #surfaceview #muralwallpaper
My colour psychology series has been one of the most popular on the blog over the last few years and as I'm still running through the spectrum I thought it would be timely to share this post with you again that talks about our emotional reaction to colour and if you like this then come
